The Rolling Gallery Project

January 5 – February 3, 2012
closing reception on Feb 2, 7-9pm

Have something you’d like to part ways with? The Rolling Gallery may be the creative opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Somerville artist Heidi Reynolds’ innovative collaboration project will visit the Distillery Gallery from January 5th to February 3rd.

The Rolling Gallery Project encourages the letting go of works of art, objects, and personal mementos…all of which can be attached to this ever-growing sphere. “The ball is a manifestation of letting go and re-imagining,” Reynolds explains. “How can letting go of objects from the past encourage us to re-envision the present?”

The Rolling Gallery is also a unique opportunity for collaboration. By including people from all walks of life, and from places as far away as Costa Rica – where a partner of Reynolds’ started a pod of the project that will be added to the main piece – the Rolling Gallery is a moveable tribute to the artist in everyone. “One of the goals is to break down the barriers between artist and non-artist, gallery and real-world space,” says Reynolds. During its stay at Distillery Gallery, Reynolds will host two workshops (Jan 14th & 28th, 1-3pm) that will give Distillery-based artists and other the opportunity to contribute to the project.

Upon departure, the Rolling Gallery will make its way to the Sherman Café in Somerville and other locales. On May 12th, Reynolds and her team will transport the Rolling Gallery to the ArtsUnion plaza in Union Square, where the piece will be “undone” and its materials re-imagined to create new works of art.
